Character Analysis- The Necklace “Mathilde Loisel

The Necklace

Guy de Maupassant

Everyone has certain traits that set them apart from others. This is proved to be true with Mathilde Loisel a middle class woman who has a supportive husband that pleases her never-ending wishes. This woman grieves over owning little luxuries after hard work her husband is able to get her an invitation to a Ministerial Mansion, a prestigious event, in the beginning she seems satisfied. Her mind quickly changes when she want a new dress which her husband buys. Not satisfied she borrows a necklace from her dear friend, which she later loses and repays. She goes to many hardships due to her traits these involve being finicky, dependent, and self- centered.

Finicky meaning ” being hard to please”  is a trait which is the most fatal in the story. Mathilde always turns away her husbands efforts to make her happy. He buys her a new dress when the Ministerial Mansion ball comes up. She isn’t very appreciative of his attempt to please her. Instead, she mopes around complaining she’ll look like a pauper, due to her wearing no jewelry. When he suggests flowers she just makes matter worse. He suggests borrowing a necklace , which she does.

Another trait Mathilde owns is being dependent. I beleive she is very dependent on her husband. She always expects him to please her or buy the items she wants. An example of this would be when she loses the necklace he is the one who spends his inheritance to pay back for her mistakes. Mathilde also depends on him to fix her mistakes , which throughout the story he does so. Because of her actions the story brings hardships to both.

Being self-centered is another trait Mathilde Loisel owns. She never thinks about anyone but herself. At the ball when her husband tries to protect her from the cold. She pushes him away because she doesn’t want to look poor due to her shabby cover. Another way she is self-centered is at the beginning of the story she mopes about how miserable she is because she doesn’t live in a luxurious home. Instead of being thankful for what she has she grieves over not being charming, wealthy or power-stricken.

Threes traits are what made “The Necklace”  so understanding. If it weren’t for Mathilde’s actions and traits the moral of the story would have never been learned.  Being dependent, finicky, and self- centered are what made Mathilde an example of living in a sad grieving life.

Poetry Assignment

Why is the Rose so Pale

Heinrich Heine

Ah Dearest, canst thou tell me why

The Rose should be so pale

And why the azure violet

Should wither in the vale?

And why the lark should, in the cloud,

So sorrowfully sing?

And why the loveliest  balsam-buds

A scent of death should spring?

And why the sun upon the mead

So chillingly should frown?

And why the earth, like a grave

Be mouldering and brown?

And why is it that I, myself,

So languishing should be?

And why is it, my heart-of-hearts

That thou forsakest me?

S- The Subject is the fact that the poet is going through Heartbreak in which he feels he can’t bear. The woman he loves has left and he is now left in a lonesome grief.

O- The Occasion of the poem is that the poet is going over the grief he is feeling. He is questioning everything that is going around him and comparing it to his sadness.

A- The Audience this poem is intended for is the woman who has walked out of his life.”Dearest” is the person who the poem is intended for.

P- Mr.Heine’s Purpose for writing this poem is to show how much he’s going through to the person who has caused him pain. He is expressing his emotions through the poem.

S- The Speaker is the poet. He doesn’t mention two people plus he is speaking directly to the woman.

Tone- The Tone seems to be solemn, reflective, questioning, and macabre.

Figurative Language and Structure-  The poet does use rhyme which would follow into a ABCB pattern. Heine also uses  repetition ” and why” throughout the poem. Imagery is also used an example of this would be “azure violet” in line  4 or “And why the Earth should ,like a grave/be moulder ing and brown” line 11 and 12. THe devices he uses are rhyme, repetition, and imagery.

Assignment #3- Favorite Mythological God

Aphrodite the goddess of love, lust, and beauty. Many believe she sprout out of the foam, when Cronus threw the genitals of Uranus into the ocean. Others say she is the daughter of Zeus and Dione. She is also the wife of Hephaestus, but she dislikes being married to him. When Zeus gave Hephaestus Aphrodite’s hand in marriage he was filled with joy and made her many jewels. This wasn’t such a good idea since even more gods and mortals where attracted to her. Aphrodite’s many lovers included Adonis, Anchises, and Ares. Aphrodite has a festival in her honor called Aphrodisiac held in many areas in Greece. During my reading on Aphrodite I learned she was a very sexual goddess and her lady worshipers had a special way of worshipping her, which included sexual intercourse. She has played many roles in Greek Mythology.  I found these facts at: http://www.pantheon.org/articles/a/aphrodite.html I found this picture at: http://www.tqnyc.org/NYC063035/Godesses.htmlaphrodite.gif

The Color Purple

Hello I’m  addicted to the color purple because I believe it’s the best color ever! Sometimes I wear purple sashes around my neck, or I wear purple tank tops. Everyday I have to be wearing something purple wether it’s clothes , makeup, or even shoes.  At school I  normally carry colored pens including a purple one. I have to say that  I love color because it adds a sense of splash to my life.
